Mumbai will soon get 238 new AC locals, safer non-AC trains with auto-closing doors, and 15-coach upgrades. Station redevelopment and metro integration are also in full swing.

Mumbai | August 5, 2025: In a major announcement for Mumbai’s suburban rail users, Indian Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar has confirmed that all hurdles in procuring 238 new AC local trains have been cleared. During his visit to Mumbai, he stated that tenders for these trains will be floated soon, marking a significant step toward safer and more comfortable daily travel.

Kumar also revealed that by December 2025, prototypes of two new non-AC locals featuring automatic door closing systems will be ready. This safety feature is being introduced to curb the growing number of accidents caused by passengers falling from overcrowded local trains.

Addressing the increasing rush in Mumbai’s locals, Kumar directed officials to initiate preparations for running 15-coach trains across all suburban routes. This move is aimed at significantly boosting passenger capacity.

Major Railway Infrastructure Boost

The Chairman emphasized that better station infrastructure is the need of the hour for Mumbai. To this end, terminals like Panvel, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Jogeshwari, and Vasai are being developed. A full-scale survey is underway to integrate railway stations with the expanding metro network, with particular attention to Ghatkopar.

He also assured that redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is being expedited despite construction challenges due to live traffic. His Mumbai visit also included a review of preparations for the 2027 Nashik Kumbh Mela, for which additional passenger handling plans are in the works.

With modern AC locals, safer non-AC coaches, and longer trains, Mumbai’s railway system is headed for a commuter-friendly transformation.
