Rishabh Pant smashed a stunning century against England in the Leeds Test, overtaking MS Dhoni’s record of six Test centuries and proving his critics wrong after a lukewarm IPL 2025 performance.

Leeds | June 21: In a blazing return to form, Rishabh Pant silenced critics by scoring a brilliant century on the second day of the first Test against England at Leeds. Known for his fearless batting style, Pant brought up his 7th Test hundred in true flamboyant fashion—hitting a one-handed six off off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.

Pant, who faced 146 balls and struck 10 fours and 4 sixes, had faced criticism for his underwhelming IPL 2025 season, with many questioning his inclusion in the Test squad. However, his commanding performance has now not only justified his selection, but also earned him the record for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper, surpassing the legendary MS Dhoni, who had six.

Interestingly, all of Dhoni’s Test centuries came in Asia, while Pant’s record is truly global—with three centuries in England, and one each in Australia and South Africa, showing his strength in foreign conditions.

This century also marks Pant’s first major performance as India’s regular vice-captain, adding leadership credibility to his explosive game. With this milestone, he also becomes the only visiting wicketkeeper to score more than one Test century on English soil.

Despite some inconsistencies in recent tours—like his 99-run dismissal against New Zealand last year, and a modest performance in Australia, Pant has remained a key match-winner for India in red-ball cricket.

India will now look to capitalize on Pant’s momentum as the Test series unfolds, with the young star firmly back in the spotlight—not just as a wicketkeeper-batsman, but as a future leader.
