Mumbai, June 20, 2025: Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has spoken out for the first time regarding the renaming of the India-England Test series trophy as the ‘Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy’, a move that initially sparked mixed reactions, especially over the removal of the Pataudi name.

Speaking to RevSportz, Tendulkar clarified that the decision to rename the trophy was entirely made by the BCCI and ECB, and he was informed only after it was finalized.

“It was not my decision,” Sachin said.
“But I deeply respect the contribution of the Pataudi family to Indian cricket. From Pataudi Sr., who played for both India and England, to Tiger Pataudi, who led India with distinction—this legacy is priceless.”

Tendulkar also revealed that he personally reached out to the Pataudi family and later contacted BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and the ECB, urging them to find a way to honor the Pataudi legacy despite the name change.

Thanks to these efforts, a compromise was reached: the series-winning captain will now receive the ‘Pataudi Medal of Excellence’, thus keeping the Pataudi legacy alive in a different but meaningful way.

Reflecting on the new trophy bearing his name alongside England pacer James Anderson, Sachin expressed humility:

“England has played a huge role in my journey—from my first international century at Old Trafford to being the first non-Englishman to play for Yorkshire. My mother-in-law is English, so there’s even a family connection! It’s an honor to share this with James Anderson, who is one of England’s greats.”

As cricket evolves, Sachin’s balanced and respectful approach toward legacy, culture, and recognition has won appreciation from fans and players alike. His efforts to honor past legends while accepting present accolades serve as a reminder of the spirit that defines the game.
