DGCA’s inspection post-Ahmedabad crash revealed critical safety lapses at top Indian airports, including worn tires, software gaps, and poor maintenance, raising serious questions on aviation oversight and accountability.
New Delhi | June 25, 2025 — In the wake of the recent Air India mishap in Ahmedabad, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has raised serious concerns about safety oversights at key airports across the country, including Delhi and Mumbai.
A late-night and early-morning inspection was conducted by two teams led by DGCA’s Joint Director General, uncovering multiple violations in aircraft maintenance, runway conditions, and safety protocols.
Major Defects Found:
- Worn-out tires on domestic aircraft, delaying flights
- Blurry or faded centerlines on runways, risking visibility
- Repeated technical issues that were flagged earlier but never fixed
- Absence of flight simulators tailored to aircraft design
- Software updates in training systems left pending
- Poor maintenance of baggage trolleys and safety gear
The DGCA pointed out that these lapses had been highlighted before, but airport authorities and engineering departments failed to take lasting corrective action. Shockingly, many maintenance violations were discovered repeatedly, raising questions about oversight and accountability.
Structural and Technical Neglect
- New constructions in airport zones were not surveyed or assessed for safety
- Pre-flight medical assessments were not consistently followed
- Technical logs lacked defect entries, making it harder to track and fix issues
- Ramp safety procedures and communication systems showed signs of neglect
Despite these critical red flags, DGCA has not publicly named the departments or airlines responsible, sparking concern among passengers and aviation experts alike.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu responded to the findings, stating:
“There will be no compromise on safety. This is a highly sensitive issue. We will get to the root of the accident and bring the facts to light through a full investigation.”
The Ministry has assured that stringent actions will be taken after the inquiry is completed. Meanwhile, aviation watchdogs are calling for real-time transparency in aviation audits and stronger penalties for repeated negligence.
