Pune| June 02 , 2025 : Captain Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 87-run knock powered Punjab Kings to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in the IPL Qualifier-2 late Sunday night, sending Punjab into their first IPL final since 2014. They will now face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the grand homestretch on June 3.
Chasing a stiff target of 204, Punjab had early hiccups. Trent Boult removed Prabhsimran Singh for 6, and despite small contributions from Priyansh Arya (20) and Josh Inglis (38), Punjab kept losing wickets. But Iyer, along with Nehal Wadhera(48), sutured an 84- run cooperation to revive the innings. Even after Wadhera’s dismissal and a run-out of Shashank Singh, Iyer stood firm, smashing five fours and eight sixes. He was ably supported by Marcus Stoinis, who finished unbeaten on 2.
Earlier, Punjab won the toss and opted to field. Mumbai’s innings saw useful contributions from Jonny Bairstow (38), Tilak Verma (44), Suryakumar Yadav (44), and a fiery finish by Naman Dhir (37 off 18). Despite reaching 203/6, Mumbai couldn’t defend the total.
With this win, Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 journey ends, while Punjab Kings march into the final, carrying hopes of their maiden IPL title.
