Sinhagad Road Miseries: slipper roads, ruptured chambers turning journey dangerous

Burst chambers and stagnant water on the Sinhagad Road are turning it into a slippery menace. Residents demand speedy repairs as bikers face daily injury from poor roadworks and traffic jams.

Pune: Apart from the regular traffic congestion, Sinhagad Road homeowners must deal with a more serious problem: busted chambers pouring water into roads, endangering everyday travel. In places like Appasaheb More Chowk in Manikbagh, chamber ruptures have caused stagnant water to take over, leading to two-wheeler slips and major accidents affecting everyone from young to senior folks.

Even with constant incidents, repairs come late and only when an injury results. Similar risk looms big in the section between Veer Shiva Kashid Chowk to Appasaheb More Chowk, where continuous water pipeline work has resulted in a burst sewage chamber. Even in peak summer, the scenario has left the road inundated for more than eight days, giving the area the monsoon-like appearance.

Water keeps pits and puddles unseen while 12-inch pipelines are built and dug-up highways open to heavy traffic. Suddenly skids and falls have become a frequent occurrence as two-wheelers approach silently. Former corporator Jyoti Gosavi has encouraged quick response, but locals continue to be annoyed by the slowness of government, particularly when caught in long queues with inadequate road surface to depend on.

Isn’t such a negligence too costly when daily drivers pass over exposed ditches, hidden water pools, and blind corners. Roads should be seen by government as lifeblood rather than as constructions. The city needs safe commutes; it does not require apologies following mishaps.
