Suicide is the leading cause of death among Indian youth aged 15–29, with a higher rate among women. Experts urge urgent mental health support and awareness to tackle this growing crisis.

New Delhi – Suicide continues to be the leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29 in India, according to a recent report analyzing causes of death between 2020 and 2022. The data reveals that 17.1% of deaths in this age group during this period were due to suicide—roughly one in every six deaths.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is also the most common cause of death among young people globally in this age group. The Indian data reflects a similarly alarming trend.

Interestingly, suicide does not appear in the list of top 10 causes of death across all age groups, which is dominated by respiratory diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular illnesses. However, the scenario is drastically different for the youth.

The report further highlights a higher suicide rate among young women (18.2%) compared to young men (16.3%). Experts suggest this indicates a pressing need to prioritize mental health support for young women.

Researchers have observed a steady rise in depression and anxiety among young people, triggered by mental stress, social pressure, academic and career concerns, family issues, and overuse of digital technology and social media.

This data serves as a warning for the government and society to act swiftly. There is an urgent need to improve access to mental health services, launch awareness campaigns, promote emotional education in schools and colleges, and encourage open dialogue around mental well-being.
