The Tree Plantation Drive of PMC gains slow momentum among little public awareness.

Although at a slow pace, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) ecological initiative to replace trees that have been lost in the process of road expansions is underway.  Only fifteen Pune’s housing societies have donated space for planting new seedlings, thus underlining a public knowledge and people participation disparity.

Pune | May 16, 2025: PMC started cutting trees along important roadways to widen highways as part of massive infrastructure improvements.  The municipal body has asked local housing societies for help since it owns very little open space for replantation.  Only societies from Baner, Balewadi, and Kothrud have thus so far decided to cooperate by providing space for farms and pledging to look after the saplings.

The difficulties were described by Head of PMC’s Roads Department Aniruddha Pawaskar: Tree removal is unavoidable in road expansion.  Since PMC owns little land, we asked housing organizations to assist.  We are pushing more societies to register and engage, having detailed information on our website.

There had not been any success in trying to have the Forest Department supply wooded ground for a plantation.  PMC officials said the department has insisted on payment for such land, therefore restricting the availability of free space.

Some housing communities have even kindly asked for relocated displaced trees close by.  PMC thinks this is a great way to increase city-wide involvement.

Kalyani Nagar to North Main Road tree cutting is one huge road project that is in progress.  The surrounding communities have made up their minds to collaborate with PMC in order to preserve green areas and reopen space trees.

Officials acknowledge that the success of the program depends critically on increased public involvement and improved communication even with these encouraging developments.

Both residents and activists call PMC to use social media, ward offices, and community leaders to raise awareness and motivate other countries to join the endeavor.

Emphasizing that citizen involvement is not only required but also essential for creating sustainable, green urban settings, PMC believes this effort will develop from a restricted pilot to a major movement.
