Tragedy in Ahmedabad

Pune,14 June 2025: Viman Nagar, a crowded residential and business area only 1 to 2 kilometers away from Pune International Airport, isn’t immune to the noise of low-flying aircraft. Being close to the airport has residents looking up almost every day to see planes flying just above their neighborhoods upon takeoff and landing. Though this aerial activity is an everyday aspect of life in Viman Nagar, it has long created discomfort among the residents, with the perpetual flyovers above giving rise to a persistent sense of fear. The recent tragic accident of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad has added to these fears, casting a shadow of fear on the community and leading to serious questions about aviation safety over densely populated areas.

It was on June 12, 2025, that disaster befell when an Air India plane carrying 242 passengers from Ahmedabad to London crashed a few minutes after it took off. The plane crashed into a doctors’ hostel in the vicinity of a medical college, killing 241 people in one of the worst air disasters in recent history. The accident caused shockwaves throughout the country, with communities around airports, such as Viman Nagar, struggling with increased fear regarding the threat of low-flying aircraft. Pune International Airport’s location close to residential areas has long been a cause for concern, but this tragic accident put all that into stark perspective, raising concerns for a repeat of the tragedy right on one’s doorstep.

Viman Nagar residents have endured the drone of airplane engines for years as low-flying planes rumble overhead. The Ahmedabad crash has turned the familiar din into a cold reminder of exposure as residents wonder now about safety protocols controlling air traffic over residential areas. The psychological impact of the tragedy, combined with the sight of aircraft flying near each other in danger, has put the community at a heightened state of anxiety, and people have demanded reassurances from the aviation authorities.

Even though such incidents are extremely rare, the psychological effect on the inhabitants of Viman Nagar is irrefutable. The occurrence of planes, which were a part of everyday life, fills a large number of people with dread today. The Ahmedabad disaster has precipitated debates on whether more stringent regulations or other flight routes might lower risks and reclaim peace of mind. While some residents take comfort in the statistical improbability of plane crashes, the human toll of recent devastation points to the imperative for strong safety protocols to safeguard communities under the shadow of congested airports.

While Viman Nagar rides out this tide of fear, the crash in Ahmedabad is a grim wake-up call. It throws into relief the precarious seesaw between urbanization and air safety, calling for the concerns of residents around airports to be heard by all parties. Until then, Viman Nagar’s residents will continue to keep a watchful eye, awaiting action that will make their skies busy and secure.
