Mumbai–Pune route to get India’s longest railway tunnel; project to save time, reduce fuel use, and aid industrial growth.
Anshu Kashid | Pune| April 18, 2025 : In a major infrastructural leap, Indian Railways is set to construct the longest railway tunnel in the country—a 30-kilometer stretch between Karjat and Talegaon—aimed at significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and Pune.
As part of the proposed fourth and fifth railway lines on this corridor, the project spans approximately 60 kilometres, out of which a staggering 43 kilometres will be underground, including the record-breaking 30-kilometer tunnel. The initiative, estimated to cost around ₹9,500 crore, is expected to be completed in six years, pending final approval from the Railway Board.
The main objective is to streamline travel through the Lonavala Ghat section, which currently requires additional engines to be attached and detached—a process that consumes around 20 minutes and results in higher fuel usage and operational costs. The new tunnel will eliminate this step, allowing trains to pass smoothly through the Ghats, saving 20 to 30 minutes in travel time.
The project also promises broader economic benefits. By reducing transportation time and fuel expenses, it will enhance logistics efficiency and give a substantial boost to the industrial supply chain operating along this key route.
According to railway officials, the detailed project report (DPR) has been completed after extensive technical studies and is now under review by the Railway Board. Once approved, ground work will commence without delay.
