Ujani Dam nears full capacity after intense rains in Pune and Solapur. From dead storage in April, it now holds 96.96 TMC. Authorities alert as Khadakwasla discharge increases into Mutha river.
Pune/Solapur, June 20, 2025: As monsoon showers intensify across Maharashtra, the Ujani Dam, a lifeline for Pune and Solapur districts, is witnessing a dramatic rise in water levels. Once nearly dry, the dam has now reached 62.16% of its full capacity, holding 96.96 TMC of water out of its total capacity of 123 TMC.
Thanks to continuous rainfall in the dam’s western Pune catchment area, a heavy inflow of 58,585 cusecs from the Daund barrage is now entering Ujani Dam. This has significantly accelerated the dam’s recovery—especially notable considering its dire condition just two months ago.
Back on April 18, 2025, Ujani had entered dead storage status, plummeting to a dangerous minus 12.30 TMC. But heavy pre-monsoon showers helped reverse the situation in record time. By May 27, the dam had already bounced back to 63 TMC, and now, within less than a month, it’s on the verge of filling up completely.
The swift rise in water levels has brought a wave of hope and enthusiasm among farmers in Pune and Solapur, who were facing water scarcity fears just weeks earlier. If the current inflow continues, the dam is expected to reach 100% capacity in the coming days, ensuring stable irrigation and drinking water supply for the season ahead.
Meanwhile, authorities have adjusted water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River. The release, which stood at 8,734 cusecs, will be increased to 15,000 cusecs from 9:30 PM to manage rising levels.
The Pune Municipal Corporation, Divisional Commissioner’s office, and all related departments have been put on high alert. The Water Resources Department is closely coordinating operations to avoid downstream flooding or inconvenience.
As the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage continues, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to ensure smooth passage and safety for Warkaris amid the shifting water levels and rainy conditions.
