Ahmedabad | June 16, 2025: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who tragically lost his life in the devastating Ahmedabad plane crash, has now been formally identified and his body handed over to his family for final rites.

Rupani was aboard the ill-fated Air India flight bound for London, which crashed shortly after takeoff last Thursday, killing 241 passengers onboard. Rupani was reportedly traveling to London to visit his family. The crash, one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters, has left the nation in mourning.

Due to the severity of the crash and the condition of the victims’ bodies, authorities are relying on DNA matching to confirm the identities of the deceased. So far, 97 DNA matches have been confirmed, and 35 bodies have been released to families for cremation or burial.

The remains of Vijay Rupani were officially handed over to his family after his DNA sample was successfully matched. The moment was both solemn and emotional, as family members prepared for his final journey amidst an atmosphere of national grief.

Officials have stated that the process of releasing bodies is being carried out with utmost care and dignity. Family members are being asked to provide DNA samples, and no body is being released without confirmation, to avoid any mistaken identity.

The government has deployed forensic teams and grief counselors at the scene and in hospitals to assist families through this difficult process.
