A tough stand has been taken by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation against the housing societies for not activating the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) even after the plant being served three notices. The water connections of as many as 184 housing societies will be disconnected from June 1 as per the orders of Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh.

Pune | May 21st, 2025: Pune has steady growth in population. This has led to an increase in demand, despite the city currently receiving 620-630 million liters of water every day. There is mismanagement, as the majority of large societies in the area utilize private tankers to supply water. In a significant way, this promotes the increasing lack of water. The Unified Building and Development Control Rules require that all residential societies with over a hundred flats and more than 20,000 square meters, or using 20,000 liters water per day, shall be mandated to install and run STPs. These plants recycle the water and make it available for reuse, thus decreasing the burden on the scanty supply of the city’s water.

A call that waste of water and damage to the environment be stopped, the PCMC reiterates that strict enforcement is needed to make sure there can be sustainable urban development under efficient water management.

This becomes all acutely visible at a time when the urban stress factor is steadily rising, prompted by factors as diverse as the greater demand for housing to the call for more headcount.
