Kolhapur | June 11, 2025: In a shocking incident that has stirred the progressive city of Kolhapur, a midnight witchcraft ritual was conducted at the historic Panchganga Ghat, revealing the chilling grip of superstition in the region. A video of the incident has gone viral, raising serious concerns among citizens and activists.
The incident took place between 10 and 11 PM, when a group of five to six men, a woman, and a self-proclaimed sorcerer were seen performing a ritual aimed at “exorcising” a ghost from the woman. The so-called sorcerer was seen chanting and blowing on her, as she screamed loudly in distress. Eyewitnesses recorded the bizarre ritual, and the sorcerer reportedly fled the scene when confronted.
Though no official complaint has been lodged and no action taken yet, the event has exposed a dark underbelly of superstition being practiced on the banks of a river that is central to Kolhapur’s daily life.
Kolhapur, known for its legacy of social reformers like Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, has prided itself on rejecting such blind beliefs. But in recent years, a rise in superstition-driven incidents and fraudulent practices has alarmed citizens. Locals are expressing concern over the spread of these dangerous rituals, which not only exploit vulnerable people but also pose serious risks to their lives and mental well-being.
Social activists have strongly demanded that police take immediate action to prevent the Ghat — a place of heritage and faith — from becoming a stage for black magic and fraud.
This incident has also reignited discussions on the need for stricter enforcement of the Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act. Citizens are being urged not to fall prey to such practices and to report such activities without delay.
