A woman in Ulwe fell into a gorge after blindly following Google Maps at night. Rescued by police and fire brigade, the incident highlights dangers of overreliance on navigation apps.

Navi Mumbai | July 26, 2025: In a frightening incident that has once again raised concerns over blind reliance on navigation apps, a woman narrowly escaped death after following Google Maps led her vehicle into a narrow gorge in Ulwe during the early hours of Friday.

The incident occurred around 1 AM when the woman, traveling along the Belapur-Uran road, chose to rely on Google Maps for directions. Instead of directing her across the Belapur-Ulwe bridge, the app guided her to a road underneath the bridge. In the darkness, assuming there was a proper road ahead, she drove forward — only to fall into a deep and narrow gorge.

Trapped and struggling to survive, she managed to raise an alarm. Fortunately, nearby NRI police received the alert in time and immediately contacted the fire brigade. A rescue team rushed to the spot and successfully pulled the woman out of danger. Her timely rescue prevented what could have turned into a fatal mishap.

The woman later stated that she had mistakenly believed there was a proper road under the bridge, simply because the app showed it. Her experience has now become a stark reminder that Google Maps, though helpful, should not be followed blindly, especially in unfamiliar and dark areas.

Officials urge citizens to cross-verify routes, especially at night or in remote regions. Overreliance on technology without situational awareness can prove costly — and in this case, nearly fatal.
