Pune| May 29, 2025 : In a fiery allegation, Raju Shetty, founder of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, has allegedly exposed a massive ₹500 crore scam in Maharashtra’s prison department involving purchases of food rations, canteen items, and electrical equipment. Despite alerting the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and top bureaucrats three months ago, Shetty claims no action has been taken.
Shetty dropped a bombshell by revealing that materials worth ₹2.5 crore were procured even before any official tender or order was issued. “On September 21, 2024, the Yerwada Prison Superintendent issued a supply letter. However, materials worth ₹2.55 crore had already been purchased beforehand in collusion with suppliers and officials,” he alleged, citing a massive mismatch between market and purchase rates.
The scam, which allegedly took place under the tenure of then IG (Prisons) Amitabh Gupta, should be probed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Shetty demanded. He also sought an investigation into Additional IG Jalindar Supekar, stating that systemic corruption is bleeding public funds meant for prison upkeep.
Shetty emphasized that the government spends hundreds of crores on maintaining prisoners. “Discrepancies in food and supply purchases must be investigated thoroughly,” he asserted, slamming the delay in action as a deliberate attempt to shield the guilty.
As the allegations shake public trust, all eyes are now on the state government—will it act swiftly or let another high-value scam slip under the radar?
