Pune, 31 May 2025: Pimpri-Chinchwad, 31 May 2025 – Despite being a decade in the making, the crucial Pavana and Indrayani river improvement project continues to face delays due to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (PMRDA) failure to appoint a consultant. The project, aimed at improving the health of the lifeline rivers of Pimpri-Chinchwad, is now mired in allegations of favoritism, red tape, and poor governance.
Both rivers are vital to the region, supplying drinking water from nearby dams to thousands of residents. However, increasing pollution within PMRDA limits has pushed the environment to a tipping point. A joint effort involving the state government, PMRDA, and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) was proposed to clean and restore the rivers, but it remains stalled.
Environmental activists and citizens are increasingly frustrated. While PMRDA recently received an “excellent performance” award from the state, critics argue its handling of this project is anything but. The consultant selection process has been restarted for the third time in four months, and several pre-bid participants have accused the administration of manipulating tender conditions to benefit a specific company.
Consulting firms allege that the tender terms are so narrowly defined that only one company qualifies, eliminating fair competition. This manipulation, they argue, is jeopardizing a project directly linked to public health and ecological preservation.
Environmentalists and citizens now demand transparency, fair bidding, and swift action to get the project moving before it’s too late.
