Pune | May 22, 2025: In a crucial turning point in India’s decades-long struggle against Maoist insurgency, on Wednesday 27 Maoists—including top commander Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju—were killed in an intense encounter with security forces in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. While several others suffered injuries, the operation claimed the life of a courageous District Reserve Guard (DRG).
Amit Shah, the minister of union homes, verified the death of General Secretary of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist). Having replaced the former chief Ganapathi, Basavaraju, 60, had a wealth of ₹1.5 crore on his head and had been commanding the Maoist organization since 2018.
Amit Shah said, praising the security forces for their “historic achievement,” the first time a general secretary level official has been neutralized in our thirty-year conflict against Maoists.
According to security officials, the operation underlined “Operation Black Forest,” a significant multi-state onslaught. Alone in Chhattisgarh, almost 200 Maoists have been killed; 183 of them come from the Bastar region, still a Maoist stronghold. Sensitive locations inside the Bastar zone include Kondagaon, Bijapur, Dantewada, Narayanpur.
PM Modi, Amit Shah: Praise Security Forces:
Acknowledging the 66th major accomplishment in anti-Maoist operations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked: “We are proud of our security forces. Our government is still dedicated to eradicate Maoism and provide a peaceful, rich future for every member of our country.
From this vantage point, Amit Shah said: “This is a landmark. 84 Maoists handed themselves in and 54 others were caught in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Maharashtra after Operation Black Forest.

As the operation continues, this triumph indicates a significant decrease in the Maoist insurgency and supports the government’s will to restore long-lasting peace to affected areas.
