In a shocking case of emotional fraud, an 85-year-old Pune resident lost Rs 11,45,350 to scammers who lured him with the promise of marriage. The incident, reported at Bibvewadi Police Station, occurred between April 18 and June 1, 2025, after the victim responded to a newspaper matrimonial ad.
The elderly man contacted a number provided in the ad, where a woman named Akanksha Patil initially spoke to him and took an online registration fee. He was then referred to another woman, Mamata Joshi, who pretended to be a potential bride. Over time, she gained his trust by spinning emotional stories—first claiming her cousin was seriously ill and needed money for treatment, then later faking an accident injury. She repeatedly promised to repay the money once she returned to Pune, convincing the victim to transfer funds online.
Within just six weeks, the scammers extracted Rs 11.45 lakh before cutting off contact. Realizing he had been cheated, the devastated senior citizen approached the police. Investigators are now working to track down the fraudsters behind this heartless scheme.
