Maharashtra to issue ID cards and ₹10 lakh insurance for snake rescuers; plans underway to grant them ‘frontline worker’ status, ensuring recognition and safety for their vital conservation efforts.

Mumbai | July 26, 2025 — In a major step towards recognizing the crucial and often risky work of snake rescuers, the Maharashtra government is set to issue official identity cards and provide accident insurance coverage of ₹10 lakh to registered snake lovers in the state. Additionally, there are positive discussions underway to classify them as ‘essential service providers’ and ‘frontline workers’.

Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced the move during a key meeting held at the Ministry Hall. The session was attended by prominent officials, including Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Milind Mhaiskar, State Wildlife Conservator M. Srinivas Rao, and President of the All India Snake Lovers and Animal Lovers Association, Prof. Sambhajirao Patil.

Bawankule emphasized that this step will not only ensure the safety of snake rescuers but also offer them much-needed official recognition for their service. He mentioned that a formal recommendation will soon be made to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to further elevate their status within the state’s emergency response system.

Snake lovers across Maharashtra often work in dangerous conditions, rescuing reptiles from human habitats and protecting both lives and biodiversity. However, until now, their efforts remained informal and unprotected. This move, officials said, will boost morale and institutional support.

The state government’s decision is being welcomed as a progressive and humane approach to wildlife conservation and grassroots animal rescue work.
