Customs officials at Pune International Airport thwarted a major drug smuggling attempt, seizing ₹10.5 crore worth of hydroponic weed from a passenger arriving from Bangkok. The arrest highlights the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking networks.

Pune| 27 July , 2025: On July 24, 2025, a routine customs check at Pune International Airport turned into a significant victory against drug trafficking when Air Intelligence Unit officers intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Bangkok on IndiGo Flight 6E-1096. The traveler, identified as Abhinay Amarnath Yadav, caught the attention of authorities due to his nervous demeanor, prompting a thorough inspection of his luggage. What they uncovered was staggering: 10.47 kilograms of hydroponic weed, a potent form of marijuana grown using advanced water-based techniques, with an estimated black-market value of ₹10.5 crore.

The discovery of such a large quantity of high-grade narcotics underscores the growing challenge of smuggling through India’s airports, particularly from international hubs like Bangkok. Hydroponic weed, known for its higher potency compared to traditional marijuana, is cultivated without soil, making it a sought-after commodity in illicit markets. The seizure represents a critical blow to drug trafficking networks, but it also raises concerns about the sophistication of smuggling operations targeting Pune, a city increasingly on the radar for such activities.

Yadav was promptly detained and charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, a stringent law aimed at curbing drug trafficking and abuse in India. Following his arrest, he was presented before a magistrate, who ordered judicial custody. Authorities are now diving deeper into the case, investigating potential links to larger international syndicates. The probe aims to uncover where the drugs were sourced, who was meant to receive them, and whether Yadav was a lone operator or part of a broader network exploiting air travel routes.

This bust comes amid heightened vigilance at Indian airports, with recent reports of similar seizures in Mumbai and Hyderabad signaling a rise in attempts to smuggle hydroponic weed from Southeast Asia. For the people of Pune, this incident is a sobering reminder of the global drug trade’s reach into their city. Customs officials, praised for their alertness, are working tirelessly to dismantle these networks, but the scale of the challenge is immense. The seizure not only protects communities from the spread of dangerous narcotics but also sends a strong message to traffickers about India’s resolve to combat such crimes.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus is on ensuring justice and preventing future smuggling attempts. The courage of the customs team and the importance of their work resonate with citizens who hope for safer, drug-free communities. This case highlights the critical role of vigilance and coordination in safeguarding public safety against the backdrop of an ever-evolving global drug trade.
