The Maharashtra Medical Council is rolling out mandatory QR codes for MBBS doctors to ensure patients can instantly verify their credentials. This trailblazing move aims to eliminate fake practitioners and foster trust in healthcare across the state.

Pune | 30 July, 2025: In a bold step to protect patients and uphold the integrity of healthcare, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has mandated that all MBBS doctors in the state display QR codes at their clinics. This innovative system allows patients to verify a doctor’s credentials in real time, ensuring they receive care from qualified professionals. The initiative addresses the alarming rise of fake doctors operating with fraudulent certificates, a concern that has eroded trust in Maharashtra’s medical system.

The decision follows heated discussions during the recent Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature, where the issue of bogus practitioners was thrust into the spotlight. The MMC responded by formalizing a plan to enhance transparency and accountability in the medical field. By scanning a QR code at a clinic, patients can instantly confirm a doctor’s registration status, shielding them from unqualified individuals. The system also equips the MMC to swiftly identify and act against fraudulent practitioners, strengthening oversight.

Building on its earlier ‘Know Your Doctor’ campaign, which saw limited success with only 10,000 doctors registering in four months, the MMC is now making QR codes mandatory. The council is drafting a proposal to amend relevant laws, which, once approved by the Medical Education Department, will implement the system across Maharashtra. This could make Maharashtra the first state in India to adopt such an extensive QR-based doctor verification framework.

To bolster enforcement, a joint committee with members from the Indian Medical Association, MMC, and Public Health Department has been established. This group will work to eradicate fake doctors and ensure only legitimate professionals practice medicine. The QR code system not only verifies credentials but also streamlines the MMC’s efforts to maintain an accurate registry, removing impostors and supporting qualified doctors.

For patients, this initiative brings reassurance, knowing they can trust their healthcare providers. For genuine doctors, it reinforces their credibility and protects their profession from fraud. The MMC’s forward-thinking approach leverages technology to address a critical issue, prioritizing patient safety and professional integrity. As Maharashtra pioneers this model, it could inspire other states to adopt similar measures, creating a safer, more trustworthy healthcare landscape nationwide. This initiative marks a significant stride toward ensuring that every patient receives care from a verified professional, restoring confidence in the medical community.
