New Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne replaces Manikrao Kokate but sparks controversy with a cryptic “crooked-then-straight” remark at a Revenue Day event, drawing criticism from opposition leaders.

Mumbai | August 2, 2025: Following the recent controversy during the monsoon session, former Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate—caught playing online rummy on his phone in the legislative house—has been removed from his post. In his place, Dattatray Bharne has been appointed as the new Agriculture Minister. Additionally, Bharne has also been given the charge of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department.

However, controversy has already surrounded Bharne barely a day into his new role. During a speech at a Revenue Day function in Indapur, his comments aimed at revenue officials raised many eyebrows. Speaking to the officers, Bharne remarked, “Everyone does simple work, but when they do something crookedly and then straighten it, people remember it.”

The cryptic and controversial statement left many officials in the audience visibly confused. Opposition parties have seized on the remark, criticizing Bharne for allegedly promoting unethical behaviour under the guise of cleverness. At a time when public expectations from the revenue department are rooted in transparency and fairness, such a statement from a cabinet minister has triggered a fierce debate on political accountability.

While Bharne also spoke in support of timely justice for farmers and the proper delivery of government schemes, the spotlight remains firmly on his puzzling and controversial phrase. Whether it was an awkward metaphor or a deliberate comment remains unclear, but the minister may find himself fending off backlash in the days to come.
