Pune | May 19, 2025: India has witnessed a remarkable rise in smartphone exports over the past three years, with shipments to the United States increasing fivefold. Exports to Japan have also surged, quadrupling during the same period. According to government data, the value of smartphone exports reached $24.14 billion in the financial year 2024-25, marking a 55% increase from $15.57 billion the previous year. This growth has helped smartphones surpass petroleum products and diamonds as India’s leading export items.
With imports of $10.6 billion in 2024–25 alone, the US continues to have the largest market for Indian cellphones. Doubling to $2.2 billion in the Netherlands and rising to $1.26 billion in Italy, other key markets such as these also saw significant increases. Analysts in the industry credit this impressive growth with the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has spurred domestic industry growth and investment.
The PLI initiative has strengthened India’s role in the global supply chain, transforming the country into a major manufacturing and consumption hub for smartphones. The top five export destinations last year included the US, Netherlands, Italy, Japan, and the Czech Republic.
