Pune | May 26, 2025: In an unprecedented turn of events, Maharashtra is grappling with torrential rainfall that has plunged several districts into chaos. While Mumbai breaks a 107-year rainfall record, the flood-hit regions of Pune and Satara are battling rising water levels, disrupted connectivity, and widespread damage.
For the past four days, relentless rains have battered Satara, swelling riverbanks and submerging vast areas. Sangam Mahuli, a low-lying village, is particularly impacted as the river’s water level continues to rise dangerously. Several villages in the district have been cut off from access routes, triggering an emergency response.
In Pune district, heavy rainfall has turned Indapur, Baramati, and Daund into flood zones. Baramati’s Nira canal breached its banks on Sunday, letting water pour into residential areas. Many homes have been flooded, and normal life is at a standstill. The administration has sounded high alerts, urging citizens to remain indoors and take precautions.
To manage the crisis, two NDRF teams have been deployed in the most affected zones for rescue and relief operations.
Meanwhile, Mumbai has recorded the heaviest May rainfall in over a century, toppling all records since 1917. The Indian Meteorological Department confirmed that this year’s monsoon arrived 16 days early, setting foot in Mumbai on May 26, as opposed to the usual June 11.
The city’s earlier monsoon arrivals in 1956, 1962, and 1971 – all on May 29 – have now been surpassed, signaling a dramatic shift in monsoonal patterns.
The unexpected and intense rainfall throughout the state has not only interrupted everyday activities but also emphasized the critical necessity for climate readiness. Officials are vigilant as additional rainfall is anticipated in the next few days.
