Pune’s traffic-congested streets, usually plagued by increasing traffic and city mayhem, are in for a significant overhaul with the city police introducing an advanced smart technology project aimed at guaranteeing smoother vehicle movement. Targeting the issues of population expansion and common congestion, this modern project adds 125 internet protocol (IP) speakers strategically placed at major intersections throughout the city. These high-tech gadgets, plugged directly into a master CCTV command center, give the police the authority to talk to citizens in real time and address their traffic congestion choke points in real time.

In emergency situations such as traffic congestions, waterlogging due to heavy rainfall, accidents, or tree falls, officers can give clear, direct instructions from the command center. This allows quick response and ensures continued optimal flow of traffic. Apart from crisis scenarios, the system is of great help during mass gatherings like festivals, processions, or public events. Locales such as Fergusson College Road, Deccan, Shivajinagar, Koregaon Park, and Katraj, which are thronged by people during festivities like Ganeshotsav, will be aided by efficient communication, directing citizens in an orderly fashion and lessening chaos.
One of the best advantages of this technology is that it can rank emergency vehicles first. Whether it is an ambulance speeding to save lives, a fire engine speeding to an incident, or a VIP convoy requiring quick passage, officers have been able to utilize the speakers to give instant commands, like clearing roads for these vehicles. Not only does this save precious time, but it also generates public compliance, with persons responding without resorting to fines or legal action. The system increases safety and deepens community trust by facilitating proactive, non-intrusive communication.
Already active in major zones, the project is only the start. The police intend to roll out the network to 500 smart speakers, reaching additional junctions and making its impact citywide. The rollout in phases will bring the technology to all corners of Pune, revolutionizing the way traffic is handled. Large festivals such as Ashadhi Wari, Ganeshotsav, and New Year’s celebrations, which attract huge crowds, will provide the ultimate test bed. Police will be able to control crowd flow effectively through the speakers, providing real-time directions to keep the city flowing.
The smart traffic system is not just a means to achieving instant interventions; it’s a move towards urban modernization.
