Sangli woman Rituja Rajge, seven months pregnant, allegedly died by suicide due to religious conversion pressure from in-laws. Her husband and family members arrested. Probe underway; women’s groups demand justice.
Sangli | June 12, 2025: A heartbreaking case from Sangli has brought attention to growing concerns over domestic coercion and religious freedom. Rituja Rajge, a seven-month pregnant woman, reportedly ended her life after allegedly facing persistent pressure from her in-laws to convert to Christianity.
The tragic event occurred on June 6 at her home in Kupwad MIDC, where Rituja was found dead by suicide. Her father has accused the husband and in-laws of emotionally tormenting her into changing her faith, despite her condition and unwillingness.
Based on the serious allegations, police have arrested Rituja’s husband Rukumar Rajge, mother-in-law Alka Rajge, and father-in-law Suresh Rajge. They face charges related to abetment of suicide and religious coercion.
According to initial police reports, the young woman was enduring mental and emotional distress at the hands of her marital family. Authorities are now conducting a detailed inquiry to determine the extent of the alleged harassment and verify the claims made by her family.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community. Women’s rights groups have strongly condemned the incident, demanding stricter laws and swifter justice to prevent such tragedies. Many are also calling for tougher enforcement against forced religious conversions.
This deeply sorrowful case underscores the need for greater awareness, empathy, and legal protection for women, especially during vulnerable phases like pregnancy, where support—not stress—is vital.
