Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s palkhi ceremony will begin at 8 PM instead of 4 PM on June 19 due to the Thursday ritual. Gajanan Maharaj and Adishakti Mukta palkhis have already departed
Pune | June 12, 2025: As excitement builds across Maharashtra for the sacred Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage, important updates have emerged regarding the departure ceremony of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s palanquin (palkhi) from Alandi. Unlike every year when the palkhi ceremony begins at 4 PM, this year it will begin four hours later, at 8 PM on Wednesday, June 19.
Explaining the reason for this change, trustees Dr. Bhavarth Dekhne and Rohini Pawar said that since June 19 falls on a Thursday, the weekly Thursday palkhi ritual (observed every Thursday) will be conducted first as per tradition. After this Thursday ceremony and aarti, the main Ashadhi Wari palkhi to Pandharpur will begin its journey.
Trustee Rohini Pawar added that, respecting Warkari sentiments, the Thursday palkhi will leave early and finish before sunset. The evening aarti will follow, and then the grand procession for Pandharpur will be flagged off. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate has held a planning meeting to ensure smooth conduct of the entire event.
Meanwhile, the palkhi of Sant Gajanan Maharaj from Shegaon in Buldhana district already began its 700 km journey on June 2, marking the 56th year of this pilgrimage. Around 700 Warkaris, accompanied by traditional instruments like taal, mridang, and flags, are part of this spiritual march.
Also joining the spiritual event is the palkhi of Adishakti Mukta, which started its 600 km padayatra on June 6, further enriching this year’s Ashadhi Wari.
