MNVS protested in Bavdhan demanding arrest of institute chairman Suraj Sharma over sexual harassment claims. Delayed action triggered outrage. Investigation ongoing; institute and Sharma remain silent
Bavdhan, 14 June 2025: A major protest erupted outside the Ramchandra International Institute of Management in Bavdhan, Pune, on Thursday as members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) demanded the immediate arrest of the institution’s chairman, Suraj Sharma. The protest was sparked by serious allegations of sexual harassment made against Sharma by a female employee of the institute.
As per the FIR lodged at the Bavdhan Police Station, the woman, who serves as a manager at the institute, accused Sharma of repeatedly making inappropriate advances. In a specific incident from the second week of May, Sharma allegedly complimented her appearance before grabbing her hand and trying to pull her close, she claimed.
Following her complaint, the police registered a case under applicable sections related to molestation. However, the lack of action in apprehending Sharma has triggered widespread anger, particularly among the local youth and student organizations.
MNVS activists assembled in large numbers outside the institute, chanting slogans and condemning what they termed as deliberate inaction by the authorities. They alleged that Sharma, who is originally from outside Maharashtra, is being shielded despite the serious nature of the complaint.
“How can a non-Marathi man assault a Marathi woman and still walk free? This injustice will not be tolerated,” the protesters shouted.
The agitation has once again brought to light growing concerns over the safety of women in professional environments and the need for prompt legal action, especially when influential figures are involved.
Neither Sharma nor the institute has issued any public statement yet. Meanwhile, police have stated that the investigation remains underway.
