
A 13-year-old boy visiting from Rajasthan drowned in Panshet’s canal after water levels suddenly rose. Despite rescue efforts, his body was recovered hours later. The incident has deeply shocked locals
Pune | June 14, 2025: A vacation turned tragic for a family visiting from Rajasthan when their 13-year-old child drowned in a canal near the Panshet dam on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Sohanlal Lakhmaram Raika from Pali tehsil in Rajasthan, had been staying with relatives in the Panshet area for nearly two weeks. On the day of the incident, he reportedly went for a swim in the dam’s canal, unaware of the potential dangers posed by shifting water levels.
According to local authorities, a sudden surge in the water level is believed to have caused the young boy to lose control, resulting in his drowning.
Emergency services were immediately alerted. Teams from the Haveli and Velhe disaster response squads, accompanied by local police and community volunteers, sprang into action and began an intensive search operation. After hours of relentless effort, Sohanlal’s body was finally recovered from the water.
Police Constable Yuvraj Somvanshi and Divisional Officer Prashant Oval were among those who played a crucial role in the rescue attempt. Their commitment was acknowledged by onlookers, though the outcome remained heartbreaking.
The tragic loss has left the Panshet village community and the visiting family in deep sorrow. A sense of mourning prevailed as the boy, who had arrived with joy and excitement, met an untimely end.
Velhe Police have taken over the case and are conducting a detailed investigation to understand the exact sequence of events that led to the incident.
