Monsoon fully covers Maharashtra with heavy rains, triggering an orange alert in five districts. Rivers swell, roads crack, and highways shut as IMD predicts five more days of widespread rainfall.
Mumbai | June 17: The monsoon has now taken full control over Maharashtra, drenching cities and villages alike. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours in five districts: Ratnagiri, Pune Ghat, Satara Ghat, Kolhapur Ghat, and Sindhudurg, warning citizens to remain cautious amid the heavy downpours.
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon winds have now completely covered Maharashtra as of Tuesday, right on time with the usual June 15–16 timeline. The rains have also advanced into most parts of Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Bihar, setting the stage for consistent rainfall across western and central India.
Rainfall activity surged over the past 48 hours. Between June 16 and 17 morning, Mumbai Suburban district topped the chart with 83.4 mm of rain, followed by Thane (73.7 mm), Mumbai City (62.9 mm), Raigad (54.1 mm), and Palghar (49.7 mm).
The persistent rain has begun to impact daily life and transport:
- The Jagbudi river in Ratnagiri is flowing at warning levels, prompting the local administration to issue alerts to surrounding villages.
- A crack on the Mumbai-Goa Highway near Valanjavadi in Khed taluka has forced traffic to move on a single lane, creating congestion.
- In Satara, the Patan-Chiplun National Highway was shut down due to waterlogging, and vehicles have been redirected to alternate routes.
The IMD has forecast consistent and widespread rainfall for the next five days. While rain intensity slightly eased in a few regions today, most districts continue to see steady showers, especially in hilly and coastal belts.
With the monsoon now in full swing and likely to intensify in patches, citizens are urged to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow local authority guidelines.
