Indian Railway travelers face slight fare increases from July 1 to support better services. Aadhaar verification for Tatkal bookings aims to ensure fairness for all.
New Delhi, June 24, 2025 – Starting July 1, millions of train passengers across India will notice a small uptick in ticket prices, the first fare adjustment since 2020. Designed to keep travel affordable while supporting railway maintenance and improved services, the hike adds just 1 paisa per kilometer for non-AC mail and express trains and 2 paisa per kilometer for AC classes. For a 500-km journey, this means an extra ₹5 for non-AC travelers and ₹10 for AC passengers, while a 1,000-km trip will cost ₹10 and ₹20 more, respectively. Short-distance second-class travelers (up to 500 km) are spared any increase, and those traveling farther will see a modest half-paisa per kilometer rise.
The fare revision applies only to select mail and express trains, leaving suburban services and other special categories untouched. Passengers can check the updated fare structure on the Indian Railways’ official portal, www.indianrail.gov.in, the IRCTC website, or mobile app, with support available via the 139 helpline.
In a bid to make Tatkal bookings fairer, Indian Railways is also introducing mandatory Aadhaar verification starting July 1. From July 15, an additional OTP-based Aadhaar check will ensure tickets reach genuine travelers, curbing misuse. These changes reflect a commitment to balancing affordability, fairness, and progress for the countless families and individuals who rely on India’s railways every day.
