A 35-day-old baby overcomes a life-threatening kidney condition through groundbreaking surgery. Pune’s Ruby Hall Clinic shines as a beacon of hope and innovation.
Pune, June 25, 2025 – A 35-day-old infant from Mangalore has captured hearts after undergoing a rare robotic surgery at Ruby Hall Clinic, becoming one of the youngest patients in the world to receive such a procedure. Diagnosed with pelvic-ureteric junction obstruction in both kidneys—a condition that blocked urine flow, causing pain and risking permanent kidney damage—the baby’s delicate condition called for extraordinary care. Using the advanced da Vinci system, a team led by Dr. Himesh Gandhi, a pioneer in robotic surgery, skillfully removed the obstruction and restored the connection between the kidneys and bladder.
The robotic technology allowed for tiny incisions, minimizing harm to the infant’s fragile tissues and speeding up recovery. With enhanced 3D visualization and precise robotic arms, the procedure was a success, and the baby is now comfortably passing urine, on the road to a healthy future. This milestone highlights Pune’s growing stature as a hub for cutting-edge medical care, rivaling larger cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Since introducing robotic surgery for urological conditions in Pune in 2017, Dr. Gandhi has performed over 540 such operations, treating patients from adults with cancer to children with congenital issues, while also training surgeons across India.
This tiny fighter’s story is a testament to the blend of compassion, skill, and innovation that is transforming lives in Pune’s medical community.
