ICMR-AIIMS study finds no link between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden deaths in healthy adults. Causes include heart issues, substance use, and intense activity post-COVID. Vaccines remain safe and crucial.
Pune / New Delhi: A landmark study conducted jointly by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and AIIMS has concluded that COVID-19 vaccines are not responsible for sudden deaths among healthy adults.
The study, focused on individuals aged 18 to 45, comes amidst a wave of online speculation and misleading narratives linking vaccinations to unexplained fatalities. Researchers assessed factors like medical history, vaccine status, prior COVID-19 infection, and lifestyle habits of the deceased.
Their findings reveal that most sudden deaths were caused by undiagnosed cardiac issues, post-COVID heart inflammation, alcohol or tobacco use, or strenuous physical activity too soon after recovery. The experts clarified that these events cannot be directly attributed to COVID-19 vaccination.
Despite scientific clarity, misinformation continues to spread through viral videos and anecdotal claims, adding to vaccine hesitancy. A senior AIIMS official emphasized, “Vaccines have helped reduce severe cases and save lives. We must not confuse correlation with causation.”
The report also advises recovered COVID-19 patients to avoid high-intensity activity for 4 to 6 weeks, especially if they experience symptoms like fatigue or chest discomfort. Cardiac screening is recommended for those with a family history of heart disease.
The ICMR-AIIMS study aims to rebuild public trust in vaccination and shift focus toward early diagnosis, healthy recovery, and scientific awareness. Health authorities reiterated that evidence, not emotion, should drive public opinion.
