In Britain’s Spielplatz village, residents have lived clothes-free for 90 years. Founded in 1929, this naturist community enjoys modern amenities and global attention for its unique and peaceful lifestyle.
Britain, 5 July 2025: The world is full of strange places and customs, but few are as unique as Spielplatz, a small village in Hertfordshire, Britain — where residents have lived without clothes for nearly a century. Shocking but true, this naturist village has followed its clothing-free lifestyle since 1929, making it one of the oldest and most famous naturist communities in the world.
Contrary to assumptions, the people here are not underprivileged or lacking in resources. In fact, most residents live in well-furnished two-room bungalows, enjoy modern amenities, and lead a comfortable lifestyle. The village is complete with beautifully designed homes, a swimming pool, open gardens, and even a beer-friendly atmosphere.

Founded by the father of Isolt Richardson, who is now 82 years old, Spielplatz (which means “playground” in German) has maintained its naturist tradition for generations. Residents, from children to elders, live completely clothes-free as a matter of personal belief and community tradition — not due to any religious or economic reason.
Despite its unique way of life, the villagers say there’s no difference between naturists and clothed people. They believe in embracing nature in its purest form. This belief has even drawn attention from across the world. Documentaries and short films have been made on the lifestyle of this community, and visitors ranging from postmen to supermarket delivery personnel are regulars here — all well-acquainted with the unique customs of Spielplatz.
This village is a rare example of how tradition, belief, and personal freedom can create a community that thrives in its own unconventional way, while still being part of a modern nation.
