Akola | July 10 ,2025: In a disturbing incident at Jatharpeth Chowk in Akola city, a 22-year-old woman narrowly escaped an attempted rape in a car on June 16, 2025. The accused, identified as Ganesh Thakur, was arrested by the Civil Lines police on July 8 after the victim filed a complaint, prompted by relentless threats and harassment.
The victim, employed as a unit manager at a health insurance company in Akola, was on duty when Thakur, a customer agent at the same company, lured her into a four-wheeler under the pretense of a “customer call.” At around 6:30 pm, Thakur stopped the car near a milk dairy at Jatharpeth Chowk and moved to the back seat, where he attempted to assault her. According to reports, he grabbed her hand, beat her, and pressed his mouth against hers to silence her screams. Displaying remarkable courage, the victim fought back, kicking Thakur in a sensitive area, allowing her to escape the vehicle.
Fearing social stigma, the young woman initially hesitated to report the incident. However, Thakur’s subsequent threats, including coercing her into silence and threatening to frame her for suicide, pushed her to file a complaint at the Civil Lines police station on July 8. The police promptly registered a case against Thakur under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested him. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further details.
This incident follows another recent tragedy in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, where a class 10 student, harassed and sexually assaulted by a local man, took her own life. The back-to-back cases have heightened concerns about women’s safety in the region, prompting calls for stricter measures to prevent such atrocities. The Akola police are under pressure to ensure swift justice, as the community reels from the audacity of the crime committed in broad daylight at a busy chowk.
