Mumbai | July 10 ,2025: A spirited exchange between Jayant Patil and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stirred up the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during the ongoing monsoon session, as discussions continued over supplementary demands totaling ₹57,509 crore.

During the debate, Nationalist Sharad Chandra Pawar Party leader Jayant Patil raised a pressing issue — the controversial plan to relocate Thane Municipal Corporation’s garbage depot to Atkoli village in Bhiwandi taluka. He directed his questions to Environment Minister Pankaja Munde, criticizing the project for bypassing legal procedures and lacking the required approvals from the Gram Panchayat, Pollution Control Board, Environment Department, and District Committee.

Jayant Patil emphasized that dumping garbage without legal permissions is a violation of environmental law, and cautioned that no authority — including municipal corporations — should ignore environmental departments. He bluntly urged Minister Pankaja Munde to stand firm in her ministerial responsibilities and prevent unlawful activities under the pretext of development.

In a lighthearted but politically charged interruption, Ajit Pawar — seated with the ruling benches — jokingly asked Jayant Patil, “Did you buy a pollution-free EV car before questioning the Environment Department?”

Jayant Patil didn’t miss a beat. Smiling, he shot back, “Ajit Dada, send me an EV car and offer low-interest loans for EVs to all MLAs in the House.” The jab hit hard, especially in light of Ajit Pawar’s recent admission that the state’s finances were under stress. The Finance Minister, caught in the irony, had no option but to remain silent — drawing chuckles from the House.

Jayant Patil reminded the House that Bhiwandi is not a dumping ground — it’s a progressive and developing region intersected by the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg and Mumbai-Vadodara Highway. He warned that the proposed garbage depot would not only affect the environment but also cost livelihoods. Local citizens are actively opposing the project and urging the government to cancel it entirely.

In conclusion, Patil urged the government to listen to public sentiment and halt any development that lacks transparency and legal backing — especially in regions that represent Maharashtra’s growing infrastructure corridors.
