In Mangalwedha, a woman faked her death to live with her brother-in-law. She and her lover killed a mentally ill woman to stage the suicide. Both have been arrested by police.

Mangalwedha | July 16, 2025: In a chilling and bizarre case from Mangalwedha taluka of Solapur district, a married woman faked her own death by allegedly murdering a mentally ill woman, all to continue her illicit relationship with her brother-in-law. Both the woman, Kiran Sawant, and her lover Nishant Sawant—her husband’s brother—have been arrested.

The incident unfolded on July 14 in Patkal village, where a charred body was discovered inside a shack on a farm. It was initially believed to be Kiran Sawant, wife of Nagesh Sawant, who was thought to have died by suicide. Due to the condition of the body, even Kiran’s father could not identify it. However, sensing something was amiss, he filed a complaint and requested a deeper probe.

As investigations progressed, police suspicions turned toward Nishant Sawant, Nagesh’s brother. Call data records (CDRs) and further interrogation revealed that Kiran and Nishant were in a secret relationship. In a shocking revelation, it was found that Kiran was very much alive and hiding in Karad. Police immediately detained her.

The twist came when police learned that the body burned in the shack was not Kiran’s. In a gruesome act, Kiran and Nishant allegedly lured a mentally unstable woman, killed her by suffocation, and set her body ablaze to fake Kiran’s death. This was done to eliminate Kiran’s marital identity and allow the couple to live together without suspicion.

The case has sent shockwaves through the region, raising questions about how far individuals can go to fulfill illicit desires. Both Kiran and Nishant have been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
