Mumbai, June 13, 2025 —An Air India flight en route from Mumbai to London was forced to turn back mid-air today due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Flight AI-129, which had taken off from Mumbai at around 5:20 AM.
Though initial reasons for the diversion weren’t clear, sources now say that the situation is linked to the recent Israeli attack on Iran, following which Iran closed its airspace. As a result, airlines operating over the West Asian corridor have either diverted their paths or returned to their departure points.
Air India’s decision to bring the flight back is believed to be a precautionary measure to ensure passenger and crew safety. Data from Flightradar24 shows multiple commercial airlines have cleared air routes over Iran, Iraq, and Israel due to drone and missile strikes reported in the region.
Global air travel is increasingly being disrupted by geopolitical unrest. Airline operators are finding it difficult to maintain schedules amid growing risks, and such drone or missile attacks are posing serious threats to both crew and passengers.
