A woman and a youth died near Ambernath after a train hit them; she wore headphones and couldn’t hear warnings. Locals demand a pedestrian bridge, blaming railway apathy for repeated tragedies.
Ambernath | July 23, 2025: A heartbreaking accident near Morivali village in Ambernath has claimed the lives of two individuals — a woman distracted by her headphones and a young man who died trying to save her. The tragic incident has reignited demands for better railway safety infrastructure in the area.
On the evening of July 20, Vaishali Sunil Dhotre (45), a resident of Morivali, and Atish Ramesh Ambekar (29), from Mahalaxmi Nagar, were returning home from their workplace in Anandnagar MIDC. Atish had accompanied Vaishali to drop her off near her home. As Vaishali was crossing the railway track while on a phone call with headphones on, a fast-approaching train neared the crossing. Despite several warnings from bystanders, she couldn’t hear them.
Atish, witnessing the danger, rushed to pull her away from the tracks — but in a tragic twist of fate, both were hit by the train and died on the spot.
The incident has left both families devastated. Atish was the sole breadwinner for his elderly parents, and Vaishali’s family was preparing for her daughter’s wedding. Her husband, an autorickshaw driver, and her 22-year-old son are now facing a bleak future.
Following the accident, local anger is brewing. Residents, led by former corporator Nandkumar Bhagwat, are renewing their longstanding demand for a pedestrian bridge or flyover between Morivali village and B Cabin Road. Bhagwat questioned, “How many more lives will it take for the railway authorities to act?”
This incident is also a grim reminder of the dangers of using headphones while walking near railway tracks — especially in the absence of safe infrastructure.
