Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared Indian languages as cultural treasures, predicting a future where pride in native tongues replaces reliance on English, asserting they are essential to India’s identity and progress.
New Delhi, June 20, 2025: In a powerful and provocative statement on the importance of Indian languages, Union Home Minister Amit Shah predicted a cultural shift where speaking English in India may one day become a matter of embarrassment.
Speaking at a book launch event for former IAS officer Ashutosh Agnihotri’s latest publication, Shah emphasized that Indian languages are not just modes of communication, but the lifeblood of India’s cultural identity.
“Mark my words. The day isn’t far when English-speaking people in our country will feel ashamed,” Shah said.
“Our native languages are the jewels of our culture. Without them, we cannot truly be called Indian.”
He asserted that no foreign language can truly capture the depth of Indian heritage, traditions, or religious values. According to Shah, understanding India’s roots through the lens of English or other foreign tongues is inherently limiting.
“A complete India cannot be imagined through incomplete foreign languages. This battle is tough, I know—but Indian society will win it. We will think, decide, and lead the world in our own languages,” he added with conviction.
Shah highlighted that by the year 2047, when India marks 100 years of independence, native languages will play a central role in global leadership and intellectual discourse.
The Union Minister’s remarks stirred a new round of public discussion on the role of language, identity, and decolonization of thought in modern India, urging institutions and individuals alike to take pride in linguistic heritage and embrace Indian languages in education, governance, and innovation.
