A 22-year-old woman from Jharkhand died by suicide in Dapoli after alleged dowry harassment by in-laws. Four have been booked as her brother’s complaint reveals months of mental torture.
Pune/Dapoli | June 18: Even as the painful memories of Vaishnavi Hagavane’s dowry death in Mulshi are still fresh, another heartbreaking incident has surfaced—this time from the coastal Konkan region. A 22-year-old woman, Pinki Devi Dharmendra Kumar Dhamin, originally from Jharkhand, has allegedly taken her own life in Jalgaon village of Dapoli taluka, following sustained harassment by her husband and in-laws for dowry.
According to a complaint filed by her brother, Virendra Kumar Janardan Panda, Pinki Devi faced relentless pressure to bring money from her parental home. The torture, he alleges, was not just emotional but also involved threats and constant abuse from her husband Dharmendra Kumar Dhamin, his brother Rajesh Kumar Dhamin, and their parents Ramdev Dhamin and his wife.
The complaint states that the harassment started around November 9, 2023, and continued up until the day of her death—June 13, 2025.
Pinki Devi was found hanging in her home with the help of a blanket on June 13. The discovery was made by her husband after he returned home from his job in Burundi village. Initially, the Dapoli Police had registered the case as an accidental death. However, the narrative shifted dramatically after her brother filed a formal complaint alleging dowry-related harassment as the root cause.
Based on this, a case has now been registered under relevant sections against all four accused at Dapoli Police Station. This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of the Vaishnavi Hagavane case, which had sparked public outrage across Maharashtra over the persisting evil of dowry. Despite numerous awareness campaigns and stricter laws, such cases are still claiming the lives of young women, revealing a darker truth beneath the social fabric.
The Dapoli Police have begun a thorough investigation and are reportedly collecting statements and evidence to proceed with further action.
