As Uddhav and Raj Thackeray unite to oppose the trilingual policy, veteran singer Asha Bhosale distanced herself from the issue, saying she only knows Ashish Shelar in politics, avoiding political comment.

Mumbai | June 28, 2025: With political tensions rising in Maharashtra over the implementation of the trilingual education policy from Class 1, a historic joint march by Uddhav and Raj Thackeray is set to mark a rare moment of unity between the estranged brothers. The policy, seen by many as an attempt to indirectly impose Hindi, has triggered sharp backlash from opposition parties, pro-Marathi organizations, and language activists.

Amidst this backdrop, a surprising reaction came from legendary singer and Maharashtra Bhushan awardee Asha Bhosale, who was attending a tribute event on the birth anniversary of music director R. D. Burman at his residence in Mumbai. She was accompanied by Maharashtra’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar.

When asked by the media about the Thackeray brothers’ decision to join hands in protest, Asha Bhosale gave a response that raised many eyebrows:
“I only know Ashish Shelar in politics. I don’t know anyone else,” she said, subtly distancing herself from political affiliations despite her family’s historical ties with the Thackeray household.

The Mangeshkar and Thackeray families have shared a close relationship for decades. Asha Bhosale had even participated in a Marathi Language Gaurav Day event earlier this year organized by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), where she praised Raj Thackeray. Her current statement, however, marks a clear shift in tone and has triggered conversations in political and cultural circles.

When pressed on the controversial trilingual education policy, Asha Bhosale refused to comment, simply stating,
“I will not speak on politics.”

Her remarks come at a time when the Marathi versus Hindi debate has gained fresh momentum, especially after the state’s decision to make Hindi a compulsory language under the National Education Policy’s three-language formula. The upcoming July 5 all-party march, where Uddhav and Raj Thackeray will stand shoulder-to-shoulder, is expected to be politically significant, perhaps signaling the start of a new political alignment in the state.
