Pune Police are implementing the innovative Aundh Pattern to ease traffic congestion, with measures like rerouting mall exits and clearing encroachments. If successful, this model will transform traffic management citywide.
Pune | 23 July, 2025: Pune’s Aundh area, notorious for its chaotic traffic, is on the cusp of a major overhaul that could change how Punekars navigate their city. The Pune City Traffic Police have launched the “Aundh Pattern,” a compassionate and practical approach to tackle congestion at key choke points like Mahadji Shinde Road, New DP Road, and Nagras Road. This initiative, sparked by the daily struggles of commuters stuck in gridlock, aims to bring relief to families, students, and workers who face frustrating delays. The plan’s success could see it rolled out across Pune, promising smoother, safer journeys for all.

The Aundh Pattern focuses on smart, community-driven solutions. One key measure involves reconfiguring the exit gates of major commercial hubs like Westend and Reliance malls to prevent vehicles from spilling onto main roads, a common cause of bottlenecks. Encroachments clogging junctions will be cleared, creating more space for vehicles and pedestrians alike. A new traffic signal at Medipoint Hospital Chowk is also under consideration to streamline flow. These changes address the chaos at T-junctions, where the absence of signals—except at Parihar Chowk—has long frustrated drivers, especially during peak hours.
The initiative stems from a collaborative meeting held on July 22, 2025, at Swargiya Gopinath Munde Sabhagruha, where residents, police, and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials came together. The community voiced concerns about narrow roads, illegal hawkers, and insufficient parking, which shrink already strained roads. The police are exploring innovative ideas, such as enlisting wardens from commercial establishments to assist with traffic management, ensuring businesses contribute to easing the congestion they often exacerbate. This shared responsibility reflects a commitment to making Pune’s roads work for everyone.
Beyond Aundh, the plan’s potential to reshape Pune’s traffic landscape is significant. The city faces growing congestion, with a 2025 Statista report noting Punekars spend nearly a week annually stuck in traffic. The Aundh Pattern builds on earlier successes, like signal-free corridors on Pune-Ahmednagar Road, and aligns with broader efforts like the Pune Police Traffic App, launched in June 2025, which empowers citizens to report violations. By addressing root causes—encroachments, poor exit designs, and lack of signals—the plan offers hope for faster commutes and fewer accidents.
For Aundh residents, the changes mean safer evening walks near Ambedkar Chowk and less stress navigating school zones. If the pilot proves effective, Pune’s 60 lakh residents could soon experience less time in traffic and more time with loved ones. The Aundh Pattern is a testament to Pune’s resolve to transform its roads into a lifeline, not a bottleneck, for its people.
