Shivshankar Mitra, a Bank of Baroda manager in Baramati, died by suicide citing extreme workplace pressure. His emotional note urges banks to reduce pressure on employees. Police confirmation is awaited.

Baramati | 18th July, 2025: In a deeply saddening incident, Shivshankar Mitra (52), Chief Manager of the Bank of Baroda branch on Bhigwan Road, Baramati, ended his life by suicide inside the bank premises on the night of Thursday, July 17. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Mitra’s death has sent shockwaves through the banking and local community.

Mitra reportedly died by hanging himself in the bank branch. A handwritten note found at the scene reveals the mental anguish he had been experiencing due to intense work-related pressure. In the letter, Mitra stated that he had applied for voluntary retirement five days prior but received no response from senior officials, which pushed him to take the extreme step.

In his emotional note, he wrote:

“I am Shivshankar Mitra, Chief Manager of Bank of Baroda Baramati. I am committing suicide today due to the additional pressure from the bank. I request the bank not to put additional pressure on the employees. Everyone is fully aware of their respective responsibilities and they are contributing 100 percent.”

He also clearly mentioned that he was completely sober and acting of his own will, and that his family bore no blame. Addressing his wife and daughter, he wrote, “Priya, forgive me. Mahi, forgive me.” He also expressed a final wish—that his eyes be donated, if possible.

Although the police are yet to officially confirm details of the suicide note, the case highlights the growing burden of professional stress in the banking sector, especially among mid- and senior-level managers.

The tragic death of Shivshankar Mitra has sparked discussions about mental health, workplace conditions, and the need for responsive internal grievance systems within banking institutions.
