Baramati | June 13, 2025: The ongoing political tension within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has taken a sharp turn as both factions—led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar—gear up for a high-stakes face-off in the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Factory elections in Baramati.
Just weeks ago, there was speculation that both camps might come together for this election. However, with the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) officially jumping into the contest, hopes of a united front have fizzled out. Ajit Pawar had already staked his claim by filing his nomination from Category ‘B’, and now his uncle, Sharad Pawar, has thrown in his support behind the Baliraja Shetkari Panel.
This contest is shaping up to be much more than just a local cooperative election — it’s turning into a symbolic power struggle between uncle and nephew. With both Pawars putting their political weight behind rival panels, the stakes have never been higher.
Four Panels, One Factory, Big Stakes
The Malegaon sugar factory election has turned into a four-cornered contest:
- Ajit Pawar-led Shri Nilkantheshwar Panel
- Sharad Pawar-backed Baliraja Shetkari Panel
- Sahakar Bachao Shetkari Panel led by Chandrarao Taware
- Kashtkari Shetkari Panel
Ajit Pawar had already secured his position with an early application, drawing attention across Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar, who initially remained undecided, was finally persuaded by party workers and supporters to field a panel. A meeting at his Govind Bagh residence sealed the decision, with unanimous support from his faction to contest the election.
This election is also seen as a prelude to upcoming local self-government elections, with all parties trying to gauge and build their grassroots strength.
Earlier, Sharad Pawar’s faction had stayed out of the Chhatrapati Cooperative Sugar Factory election, but given strong backing from the cadre this time, the group has decided to take on the challenge in Malegaon.
