Khindipada school in Bhandup has been closed for 2 years without renovation. Students walk 3 km daily to another school, prompting public outcry and calls for urgent civic action.
Mumbai | August 4, 2025: Students of the Marathi-medium municipal school in Khindipada, Bhandup have been facing serious inconvenience for the past two years, as their school remains closed for renovation—a renovation that never began. Built in 1971, the school was shut down citing repair work, but despite the passage of two academic years, no progress has been made, forcing students to walk nearly 3 kilometers daily to attend classes in another school at Tulshetpada.
Initially, authorities attempted to teach all students in a local hall, but the space proved inadequate. Consequently, they were shifted to another BMC-run school in a neighboring area. However, the lack of public transport on this route—especially in the mornings—has made the daily journey physically taxing for the children. A BEST bus reportedly runs through the area, but only in the afternoon, offering little help for schoolbound children.
Frustrated by this ongoing problem, many parents have withdrawn their children from the municipal school system and opted for private institutions closer to home.
MLA and Teachers’ Council member Shivnath Darade has taken up the matter, writing a formal letter to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, demanding immediate action. He has called for the urgent construction of a new school building and the reopening of the Khindipada school, blaming the civic body’s negligence for the prolonged closure. Local parents and residents are now asking a pressing question: When will the administration finally act to ensure education doesn’t come with a daily struggle?
