Nashik farmer Gaurav Nikam lost a leg after being pushed from a moving train and robbed. A minor was arrested. The incident reignites debate on juvenile crime and passenger safety.
Mumbai | August 4, 2025: A harrowing incident aboard the Tapovan Express has devastated the life of Gaurav Nikam, a 26-year-old farmer from Nashik, who was returning home from Thane after finishing urgent work. On Sunday morning, while Gaurav stood near the train’s door and spoke on the phone, the train reached Ambivali station—and his life changed forever.
In a split second, a thief attacked Gaurav from outside the train, delivering a forceful blow. The impact knocked Gaurav off balance, causing him to fall off the moving train. As the wheels passed over his legs, one was instantly severed, and the other was critically injured.
But the nightmare didn’t end there. As Gaurav lay grievously injured and writhing in pain by the tracks, a thief approached and looted him, stealing his mobile phone and cash. In a matter of moments, Gaurav endured violence, disability, trauma, and robbery.
Police have since detained a minor Irani youth in connection with the attack. However, this has triggered public outrage, with citizens questioning the lenient legal provisions for juvenile offenders. The Irani gangs have a well-known criminal record, yet justice seems elusive when minors are involved.
While the accused may face minimal punishment under juvenile laws, Gaurav has been handed a lifelong sentence of physical pain, mental trauma, and financial insecurity. This incident not only highlights the deteriorating law and order on train routes like Ambivali but also underscores the urgent need for stricter laws and faster trials, especially in cases where juveniles are involved in violent, life-altering crimes.
Voices from the community are growing louder:
Should age shield someone from consequences when their actions destroy another person’s future?
Until such questions are addressed, the tracks remain unsafe, and another Gaurav Nikam could fall victim to a similar fate.
