
Chain-Snatchers Target Women on Pune Buses: Three Incidents Reported in a Week
Three women filed jewellery theft cases in Pune buses, losing valuables worth over ₹2 lakh. Cases were reported between Katraj, Swargate, and Pune Station, raising concerns over public transport passenger safety.
Pune, April 28, 2025: A string of jewellery thefts targeting women on PMP buses in Pune has raised serious questions among commuters and authorities alike. Women were the targets of chain-snatchers in three cases where they were robbed.
In the first case, a woman who was traveling from Katraj to Aranyeshwar noticed that her gold mangalsutra worth around ₹75,000 had been stolen. She had boarded a PMP bus from Katraj on Friday and realized the theft only after getting down at Aranyeshwar. A complaint to this effect has been filed at the Sahakarnagar Police Station.
In the second case, a woman who was travelling from Katraj to Aranyeshwar realized that her gold mangalsutra worth approximately ₹75,000 was missing. She had boarded a PMP bus from Katraj on Friday and came to know about the theft only after alighting at Aranyeshwar. The Sahakarnagar Police Station in the city has got the case registered.
In another case, an old lady was targeted close to the Swargate bus stand. As she was boarding a bus for Nigdi in the evening of April 11, the thieves were able to cut off her gold bangle, valued at around ₹50,000, with the help of a sharp object. The victim went to the Swargate Police Station to register her complain.
The third case was revealed when a 33-year-old woman, who was commuting from Nigdi to Pune Station on April 18, found jewellery worth ₹1.17 lakh stolen from her bag A complaint to this effect has been lodged at Bundgarden Police Station. The woman, who resides in Nigdi, realized the theft only after she reached Pune Station.
These back-to-back incidents have raised eyebrows about commuter safety on public transport and prompted calls for heightened vigilance.
