A clash between NCP and BJP supporters erupted at Vidhan Bhavan, leading to detentions and a heated standoff involving MLAs Jitendra Awhad and Rohit Pawar with police at Marine Drive station.
Pune | 18th July, 2025: A highly condemnable incident unfolded on the steps of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday, where a physical altercation broke out between supporters of NCP (Sharad Pawar) MLA Jitendra Awhad and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar. The scuffle led to both groups being detained within Vidhan Bhavan until late at night and later handed over to Marine Drive Police.
Police have registered a case against Sarjerao Baban Takle, a supporter of Padalkar, and Nitin Hindurao Deshmukh, an Awhad supporter. Tensions escalated further when MLAs Jitendra Awhad and Rohit Pawar reached the police station late at night to meet Deshmukh.
In a dramatic turn, Awhad reportedly lay down in front of the police vehicle transporting Deshmukh, attempting to prevent it from leaving. The police forcibly removed him to clear the way. Following this, both MLAs sought to determine where Deshmukh was being taken.
A heated confrontation also occurred between Rohit Pawar and a police sub-inspector (PSI) at the Marine Drive police station. Pawar, visibly angered by the officer’s response, was heard saying:
“Lower your voice! If you raise your hand, I’ll deal with you. Don’t be smart. If you can’t speak properly, then don’t. Do you understand? Get out of here. I don’t want to touch the MLA.”
This incident has sparked controversy over the behavior of public representatives, the handling of the situation by the police, and the rising tensions between political factions within the state legislature. Lawmakers lying in front of police vehicles and issuing verbal threats to police officers raise serious concerns about decorum, law enforcement autonomy, and political accountability.
